Winnie the Pooh 1st Birthday Cake
by Michelle Rossouw
(johannesburg, South Africa)
A friend asked me to make a cake for her little boy's first birthday and she wanted both chocolate and vanilla sponge with the theme of the party being Winnie the Pooh and Friends.
I made the sponge cake layers with an old and trusted recipe which I also use for cup cakes. This recipe is made with oil and not butter so the cake is light and moist and keeps well.
The layers were filled with vanilla butter cream for the vanilla part of the cake and chocolate butter cream for the chocolate layers and then the whole cake was dirty iced and covered in fondant.
I made the characters from different colored fondant and placed them on the cake. The cake was finished off with a picnic blanket, honey pot, little flowers, happy birthday and a number 1 birthday candle.
The children were so excited when they saw the cake and couldn't wait to have a piece.
