Volcano Cake

I baked 3 boxes of chocolate cake mix in a large metal mixing bowl and 1 box in a smaller glass bowl. After the cakes were cooled, I turned the larger cake upside on a plate and then inverted the smaller cake on top of that.

I then frosted both cakes with chocolate frosting and sprinkled crushed chocolate sandwich cookies over the entire cake for the "ash".

I placed a large dollop of whipped cream at the top for "smoke" and then used candy lava to decorate the top and sides of the cake. I made the candy lava by combining 1 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup light corn syrup and 1/4 cup of water and bringing it to a boil until it reached 295 degrees on a candy thermometer.

I then added red food coloring until it was the color I wanted. You can also melt crushed hard candies instead of mixing your own ingredients. I let the mixture cool for 2 minutes and then poured it out into the shapes I wanted onto a foil-lined baking sheet.
