Topsy Turvy Flip Flop Cake

(West Salem, OH)
This topsy turvy cake was made for an 8 year old girl's birthday party. She wanted her theme to be FLIP FLOPS.
I started 2 days a head of time making the flip flops. They are made from a fondant gumpaste mixture that I made in various different colors.
I cut a flip flop shape from cardboard to use as a stencil to cut out the flip flops. I lay them on a cookie sheet to dry.
I cut thin strips to use as the thong on the flip flips... I attached a point in the middle of the flip flop with clear vanilla and stretched the 2 sides over a pencil to dry.. they the thong straps were attached on the side of the flip flop with clear vanilla also.
also cut out many flowers from the gumpaste mixture and left to dry.
One day ahead of time I did the baking. The cake was a vanilla and chocolate pound cake. When the cakes were cooled i stacked and crumb coated them and put them in the freezer.
When the cakes are set firm it's easier to carve them in the topsy turvy pattern.
The center cake is covered and decorated in fondant and the Whimsy flowers floating around just give it a little something extra. This is one of my favorite cakes I've done.
I started making cakes about a year ago and just love it!! Hoping to learn more as I go.
