Thing 1 and Thing 2 Cake
by Gayla Gomes
(Kailua Kona, Hi)
This Dr. Seuss cake was for a 1 year old birthday party for twins. It was a two tiered cake, one tier was chocolate with chocolate filling and the other was yellow cake with strawberry filling.
I covered both cakes with buttercream and covered it with fondant, I first covered the bottom tier with white fondant and then made red stripes and layered the cake with the stripes. I used a template that I cut out of cardboard and traced it out on the fondant, that took a little time to get the right shape.
I covered the top tier with blue fondant and made the decorations for the border out of fondant I also made the fish out of fondant.
I used royal icing for the water drops, I piped them on to parchment paper and put them in a dehydrator, that works well here because the humidity here is very high. I also made the hair for thing 1 & 2 out of royal icing.
I used fondant to shape out thing 1 & 2, and used an edible ink pen to write 1 & 2. It was a fun cake to do.
