Sock Monkey Argyle Cake
by Trinity Wood
(Russellvile, Arkansas)
This 2 tiered birthday cake was made with fondant and modeling chocolate.
The cakes were first covered in fondant, then the argyle diamonds were cut out and applied with a water brush. The little brown stitches are piped chocolate. I did this freehand, without a template, and I would recommend a template for anyone who wants to do a better job! Mine could definitely be straighter...
The ruffles were made of fondant, rolled and cut into a strip, and gathered together with the fingers to make the ruffle look, and applied with the water brush. the bead border on top hides the seam.
On the bottom tier I made the ruffles in colors and alternated them for a more complex design.
The bows are chocolate fondant, fixed to the cake with piped chocolate.
The sock monkey figure is hand sculpted with fondant and modeling chocolate and scratched with a toothpick all over for the texture, and the gifts and number 1 are fondant with tylose.
