How to Make Novelty Cakes Such as This Lion and Zebra Cake
Easy instructions for making novelty cakes such as this zebra and
lion cake:
Bake a sheet cake the size that you need. With an icing filled bag and
round tip, size #5, draw the lion and zebra on the cake top. The tail
between the body of the lion and the tip of his is not cake. It is just
icing on the board to connect the tip (which is cake) to the lion's
body.
Using a small cake spatula, ice the side of the cake on the zebra's
muzzle with gray icing and the inside of his neck with white icing.
Now using a red brown icing and the small cake spatula ice the side
inside part of the lion's mane next to the zebra's head. The reason for
this is because it would be impossible to do these sides with the
decorater star tip because of the tight space.
You will use the star tip, size 318 for all the fill in work and the
round tip, size #5 for all of the outline work. First fill in the
zebra's muzzle and the inside of his ears with gray icing.
Next, chang ethe tip to the round tip and outline the zebra except for
the bottom of him.
Now use your round tip again and black icing and put large dots on his
muzzle for his nose and also dots for his eyes.
Change to the star tip and fill in all the black stripes. Using the
same size star tip and white icing fill in the rest of the zebra.
Change to the round tip and make a small curve for his mouth.
Use red icing and the round tip to make a red dot at the end of his
mouth.
Make a red brown icing and use the star tip and fill in the mane, nose
and tip of his tail.
Change to a round tip and outline the lion except for the bottom of
him. Don't forget the center dots in his ears and the line under his
nose and his smile.
Now make a light yellow icing and to this I added a small amount of my
red brown icing to get the body color. Use a star tip and fill in the
lion's body.
Make a tail out of icing from the body to the tip and using your red
brown icing and round tip, outline the tail.
Use black icing and the round tip and make the eyes and whiskers.
Use red icing and the round tip and make the dots at the end of the
smile.
