Nail Manicure Cake

Hi, this nail manicure cake is my third attempt at a novelty cake. I started making a fruit cake in a rectangle tin and then iced it with Royal sheet icing dyed an off white. The hand was made from a lump of Marzipan which I rolled into a fat sausage. I then slit the end into five long bits for the fingers and used my own hand to model and copy from to mold it into the right shape.
I bought some Halloween nails and cut them down and placed them on the end of the fingers and the used cocktail sticks to hold the fingers in place while they dried a little.
I used cocktails sticks to age the hand and pressed a disposal paper towel in the hand area to make it look like skin.
I then painted it with a pink flesh glaze made with food coloring and water. When the marzipan had hardened a little I place in the hand a bottle of nail varnish and let it to set more.
The cuff of the sleeve was made from black icing, ribbed at the edge with the back of a paintbrush and textured with again cocktails sticks and painted black.
The flower on the sleeve and on the cake sides where made with cookie cutters and painted in the middle with silver edible glitter to match up.
The icing is piped on (my first attempt at icing) around the bottom and I used a letter stencil imprint to give me the lines for piping MUM on the cake. I think it turned out rather good and my mum was absolutely thrilled. Cheers. Lori x
