Monster Truck Cake

I made this cake for my son's fifth birthday party. I enlarged the truck design that I created for his invitations and printed it out in three parts. I then cut them out and used those for my templates.
I baked two 9x13" yellow cakes (to package directions) let them cool then cut out the three parts. I cut the front and back of the truck out of one cake, and the middle out of the other. Then I pieced those together on a sheet of foam core board.
I baked two 6" round chocolate cakes (two package & pan directions) for the wheels. I made homemade buttercream icing using shortening, butter, confectioners sugar, vanilla & heavy whipping cream.
Then I colored the icing as needed. For the black icing I made chocolate buttercream and colored with black gel coloring. Looking at my template, I piped in my lines for the windshield, bumpers, lights, number & windows. Then using a #16 tip piped all the details.
Using a larger star tip, I piped the black for the wheels. Some details were piped using a round tip and some with flat tip.
For the suspension I cut some black licorice in half and then cut to size, using a little icing to hold in place. The cake and icing were very tasty and it was a HUGE hit with the party goers. It easily served 30.
