Jehryn's Race Track Cake
by Kelly Little
(Van Buren, Arkansas, USA)
This race track cake was a cooperative effort.
My buddy Sarah baked the cakes and made some of the icing and washed the dishes!
I found this cake on a website so we decided to copy it because it is was so unique.
Her little boy just loved it! He was by my side the whole time I was decorating it, giving me input. He's now 5.... :}
Sarah made 4 - 8" round cakes. 2 mixes. And 1 mix- 1/2 of the sports ball pan with the left over mix, we made a dozen cupcakes.
After the cakes cooled I leveled all 4 of the round cakes, iced between layers and then trimmed off a small section of each so they would sit snug together. Look at the picture to understand.
I used a serrated knife to trim out part of the center of the 1/2 ball to make a tunnel. Then placed that on top of the cake.
I put on a thick crumb coat. After it dried I started using the green and black. I also did his name in the pre made candy letters in blue.
I used a star tip on the bottom border and round tip for the black checker pattern around the bottom of the cake and a round tip for the white outlining the race track.
I smoothed parts with a Viva towel too.
And I used the grass tip for the green parts.
We used his little toy cars and a toy bush as well.
I think his dad was as excited as he was!
