I have added a bit of milk chocolate store boughten icing to my white buttercream, then adding the red coloring. You have to be careful to not add to much for it will make the red look brick color. (I have also added cocoa to my icing it.) If you use concentrated and not liquid coloring it helps too. You can get this at Walmart or Hobby Lobby in the cake section for only a few dollars. A little goes along way.

RED ICING by: KELLY
Depending of how red I want it, sometimes I have had to use an entire bottle of red!
You might try starting with another color and then turning it red.
I just gave up and use the whole bottle! Sorry I don't have a good suggestion.
