Grandma's Quilt Cake
by Katrena Martin
(Moscow, TX)
This quilt cake is a cake I made for my grandma (who makes us all quilts) for her birthday. The cake is baked in Wilton 8" and 12" pans. Its chocolate cake with homemade cookie and cream filling. I baked 2 of each size cake, let cool while I made the filling from heavy whipping cream and crushed Oreo's.
Level all four cakes stack accordingly with filling between layers, be sure to make thick icing to build a reservoir around edge of cakes to hold filling in.
Then I iced the cake in random colors and patters to represent quilt squares. The stitches, writing, needles, scissor, and heart designs are made from melted chocolate. (The heart designs were drawn by a great grandson in Germany, emailed to me then I printed them and traced on wax paper, so his art was part of the cake).
The spool of thread is Oreo cookies glued together with melted chocolate.
