Gardening Cake Hobbies
by Lori Birrell
(Edinburgh, Scotland)
Hiya, another take on a garden cake that I saw. I made this cake for my dad with a sponge base to start with with simple vanilla frosting filling. I added sponge fingers with some buttercream icing to help them stick and painted them with brown food coloring to give the appearance of a fence.
The earth is Oreo cookies crushed with some rock candies and again pressed into buttercream icing. The mushrooms are marshmallows on cocktail sticks, the bugs in the gardens I piped but I have seen them in the shops ready to just place on and go, the flowers and leaves again are piped with icing that I colored.
The trowel and garden glove I made out of Marzipan and painted then with food coloring. The windmill and seed label I found in my local Asda in the kids department for only a few pounds.
This is my first novelty cake and I am really pleased with the results and thanks to easy-birthday cakes. com for inspiring me.
I have already started my next one as requested by my sister who loved my dad's cake. Cheers. Lori x
