Festive Barney Birthday Cake
by Priscilla Frendo
(Fgura, Malta (Europe))
To achieve Barney's color for this Barney birthday cake, I used the claret coloring, added it to some sugar paste and also added some gum tragacanth so the shape will harden a bit. It took me about 3 hours to achieve the desired shape!!
For the swirls an each side of the cake, the present on top and for the balloons. I used the pastillage, as this will set really hard.
I put Barney and the other finishing touches aside and starting baking the cakes.
For the bottom cake I used two 23cm chocolate cakes, spread with ganache and placed the cakes one on top of the other. This cake was cut to an angle and covered it with light blue sugarpaste.
The middle was a bit carved to accommodate an 18cm soft almond cake filled with white ganache and jam.
This cake was first covered with sugarpaste before put in its place. Afterwards I covered the upper part of it with claret sugarpaste and finished it off with a green ribbon also made from sugarpaste.
I have continued to decorate the cake by using flower cutters and sugarpaste balls to give it a cleaner look.
The only thing that is not edible in this cake is the wire that was used to keep the balloons up as requested by the birthday girl ;)
