Erupting Volcano Cake
by Julie Hilbert
(Ceres, CA, USA)
My volcano cake was made with two full round cakes, one slightly smaller than the other, and a large chocolate muffin. I placed the smaller circle on top of the larger one, "gluing" them together with chocolate frosting. Then I "glued" on the chocolate muffin on top.
I cut the sides of the layers diagonally to make the shape of a mountain and frosted them all with chocolate frosting, filling in the crevices where needed.
I added some cookie crumbs to the "mountain" for dirt and chocolate chips for rocks. I also colored coconut green by mixing it with food coloring and sprinkled it around the bottom of the volcano for grass.
I hollowed out the muffin and placed a small cup inside. I mixed one egg with some red food coloring and poured it inside the cup along with some small pieces of dry ice.
When it was ready to serve, I filled the cup with hot water and the volcano erupted all over the place!
