Dean's St. Louis Cardinals Cake
by Kelly Smalley
(Van Buren Arkansas USA)
To make this St. Louis Cardinals cake, I used the retired baseball glove cake pan. I also used a small oven-proof round glass dish for the ball.
I used 1 cake mix and baked the 2 small ball halves first. Then I put the rest of the mix in the glove pan and baked until done. I cooled all 3 pieces on a cake rack.
After cooled, I placed the glove cake on my cake board. I used buttercream in copper, brown, white and blue.
I used round and star tips. I iced the glove first.
Then I took 1/2 of the 'ball' and iced it upside down and let dry then used a Viva towel to smooth it.
I then place the ball 1/2 on the center of the glove.
I added the 2nd 1/2 of the ball on top then finished icing in white buttercream. Let dry and finish smoothing with the Viva.
I used pull apart red twizzlers for the seam and stitches on the ball.
I put 2 skewers in the ball into the cake board. I used a toothpick and attached the bird I made out of fondant in the top of the ball.
I made the word CARDINALS out of white candy melts......I couldn't find my red ones! lol But I also thought white would show up better than red on the copper.
