Construction Site Cake
by Gail Taylor
(Halifax, Nova Scotia)
This construction site cake was made from four 9x13 homemade chocolate cakes. Although it could have been done with just two. When the cakes were cool, I put two of them side by side, length wise on a large cake board, then put on a layer of butter cream, and topped them with the other two cakes.
Once they were all together, I cut out a hole keeping the piece I cut out all in one piece. Then I turned the piece upside down and used it for the hill on the cake. So then you have a hole that the tractors are digging in and a hill to put trees for the logging trucks to be working with.
Once you have the hole dug, and the hill in place you then cover the whole thing in a crumb coating and either refrigerate it for 30 minutes, or let it sit for a couple of hours.
When the crumb coat is set, you can then start the main coat of icing. I used Wilton's paste colors. Kelly green for the hill, and brown for the rest. Although I made up two shades of brown so there would be two colors for an earthy effect. I blended these colors on top and around the sides of the cake.
I put in the hole, around the tractor, and in the tractor's digger, chocolate cookie crumbs, to look like dirt.
I used candy rocks from a candy store for the rock pile on the side of the hill. I used building blocks candy from a candy store to build the building foundation.
The men, tractors and pylons came from Walmart, and the trees are cut up greenery from the dollar store. The logs are large pretzel sticks.
The cake was a huge hit! The kids LOVED eating dirt and rocks but first they had to have their chance of playing with the tractors in the dirt. Messy but fun!
