Circular Clown Cake

To start of with, make two of your average circular sponges, and place them one on top of the other with one half thinly spread with jam and the other with butter icing.
Cover the entire cake with white fondant icing (which you'll need plenty of!) then dye a decent-sized blob of fondant icing bright red (for the nose and mouth). Separate this and roll one of the pieces into a round nose and the other into a sausage shape to make the mouth.
The eyes are made from liquorish laces arranges in crosses, while the hat and hat rim are more fondant icing, this time dyed blue. To make the hat more interesting I added a band of yellow around the rim with several jelly sweets making it more colourful. Before placing the hat on the clown, first lay brightly coloured lace on either side of the clown's head to represent his hair.
The most challenging part of the cake is the yellow ruffle around the outside, though this also means that there is no need for a ribbon round the edge. Simply dye fondant icing yellow, cut it into one/two-inch strips, then simply ruffle it. I recommend doing all the ruffles without touching the cake, then when you are finished lay the yellow around the outside and you can play with the thickness of the ruffles as you please.
This cake is NOT hard to make! I made it in a cooking lesson at high school about two years ago.
