Can I combine fondant decorations with a butter cream frosted cake?

I am using a paper plate for a baby shower as my guide and it would be a beautiful fondant cake with the different colored dots and the jungle animals and palm trees. But the mama -to-be requested a cake frosted with butter cream. Can I have any success with using fondant dots, animals, etc on a buttercream covered cake?

Fondant goes well with buttercream frosted cake. The buttercream won't melt the fondant.
